The Magic of Mushrooms

The Magic of Mushrooms

8th Nov 2018

Mushrooms have been hailed as a superfood since ancient times. Emperors ate them by the handful to ward off aging and illness, and all countries used them for medicinal uses. They contain high levels of antioxidants, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins that ward off cancers, infections, diabetes, and alzheimer's. As the only source of Vitamin D in the produce aisle, mushrooms are an absolute necessity in everyone’s diet.

Luckily for us, mushrooms also fight the signs of aging! A recent study showed that high mushroom intake lowered the amount of AGEs found in the skin. AGE is a process caused by excess sugar in the blood. The sugar binds to proteins (aka Collagen) in the skin and breaks it down.

Mushrooms are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal. This makes them great for those struggling with acne, rosacea, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Due to their high antioxidant content, mushrooms are proven at battling free radicals which are mutant cells that cause damage to healthy cells. According to researchers at Penn State, Porcini Mushrooms have the highest amount of antioxidants per mushroom. Throw them into a soup and you have an antioxidant powerhouse meal!

Here are a few amazing mushroom recipes from Bon Appetit.Kettle & Fire is my favorite place to purchase Mushroom Bone Broth. I drink this every morning, in place of tea or coffee. This bone broth is not only loaded with healthy mushrooms, it also boosts your collagen levels and improves the health of your skin.

You can also capture the power of mushrooms within your skin care products. For example, the Snow Mushroom in Sorella’a Main Squeeze Hydrating Serum acts like a sponge as it absorbs moisture from the air and your skin care products to boost hydration levels in the dermis. All skin types love this serum, including oily skin types. My oily skin clients love this serum because it balances daily oil production. Seeing a few red spots or small capillaries rising to the surface. This is the serum that will help increase collagen and diminish those red areas.

For antioxidant benefits, try Visual Changes Resurrection which is packed with two potent mushrooms that banish free radical damage and protect from pollutants found in the air.

For antibacterial support, take a look at Hale & Hush’s Clear Future Toner and Rhonda Allison’s Blemish Serum. Both contain Fomes Officinalis, a mushroom with astringent properties to kill bacteria as well as tighten pores.
