Menopausal Skin Care

Menopausal Skin Care

16th Aug 2018

Hot flashes, breakouts, night sweats, flushes. Those of us going through menopause know these symptoms very well. Our hormones are in chaos, leading to all sorts of skin issues. Breakouts appear, caused by higher levels of testosterone, while less estrogen is causing skin to sag and deflate. As we enter into menopause our skin needs different ingredients, it is a great time to create a new skin care regimen. Let’s work through it together.

A good cleanser can make all the difference with your skin. It shouldn’t just remove dirt and makeup, but also soothe and protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier. For menopausal skin, choose a cleanser with powerful nutrients as well as a light acid to defend you skin from hormonal pimples. Rhonda Allison’s Beta Green Tea Cleanser is packed with antioxidants that calm redness, protect from UV damage, and help maintain collagen. The bonus ingredient in this creamy cleanser is the Salicylic Acid which will clarify impurities without compromising the integrity of your skin.

For extra exfoliation and glow, use Sorella Apothecary’s Poppy Seed Polish in the shower. It can be left on as a mask while you shave your legs, or use a body scrub!

Toner isn’t just for teens with acne, it is a necessary step to lift away any last traces of soap residue, dirt, and makeup. Toner prepares the skin to soak up all of our loved serums, making them much more effective. If you have tried toners in the past and found them astringent and drying, give Le Mieux’s Essence Toner a try. It is alcohol and acid free, but packed with botanical ingredients that hydrate and balance the skin, making it ideal for menopausal skin that is dry and deflated.

Battling breakouts? Choose Rhonda Allison’s Mandelic Defense Lotion. The combination of skin-supporting antioxidants and lightly exfoliating Mandelic Acid are a match made in heaven. Antioxidants are one of the most powerful ingredients against damaging free radicals and collagen loss. Mandelic Acid a gentle yet effective acid that works on both breakouts and hyperpigmentation. Together, these two ingredients make this our best selling toner for dull, breakout prone skin at any age.

As we age, our cell turn over slows down by 50% leading to collagen depletion, sagging, and over-all sluggish skin. To counteract this, seek out serums packed with peptides that boost collagen and hyaluronic acid production. Our favorite serum for this is Le Mieux Collagen Peptide Serum. With peptides, ceramides, and stem cells this serum is the ultimate nourish and repair product. It’s light, creamy serum texture locks in hydration as well.

If menopause has caused your skin to begin overproducing oil, opt for a water-weight serum like Sorella Apothecary Main Squeeze Hydrating Serum. This serum is a mixture of peptides, hyaluronic acid and snow mushroom that boosts collagen and hydration levels leaving skin plumped and calm. By rehydrating the dermis, your skin will be rebalanced and less oily. This serum is also helpful for calming redness caused by flushing and hot flashes, as it has niacinamide, a powerful anti-inflammatory ingredient.

Decreased cell turnover also means that your skin is no longer naturally exfoliating itself by shedding old skin cells. You can reboot this process with the help of Vitamin A. Look for a retinol product that contains other skin beneficial ingredients. Our current favorite? Sorella Apothecary’s All Night Elixir. A 1% concentration of retinol is combined with Vitamin C and Lactic Acid, making this serum incredibly brightening and renewing.

If menopause has made your skin more sensitive, opt for a retinaldehyde instead. Retinaldehyde is a vitamin a that is derived from natural plant sources such as pumpkins. Hale & Hush’s Rare Retinal Serum will offer all of the cell renewal benefits of a vitamin a in a very gentle package. Remember to only use your retinol at night, and to always wear an SPF in the morning.

As noted earlier, antioxidants are incredibly helpful for protecting the skin from free radicals and uv damage. Vitamin C is an antioxidant all star that neutralizes pollutants and uv rays, making it the best finishing serum in the morning, before your SPF. The most cutting edge vitamin C formulation, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, can be found in Sorella Apothecary’s Pomegranate Acai Antioxidant Serum. It is UV stable and won’t oxygenate, making it the best vitamin c for daytime use.

The final step in ever daytime routine is sunscreen. For dry to normal skin types, we love Sorella’s Quench & Protect. It hydrates with hyaluronic acid, leaving a dewy glowing finish. For oily skin, opt for AOS Skin Perfection instead. Ceramides give hydration benefits without feeling too heavy on the skin.

In the evening, seal up all of your skincare with a potent night cream. Rhonda Allison’s Elite Eegf works wonderfully for this as it is packed with growth factors that heal and repair, as well as peptides that boost collagen and firm the skin. Acneic and oily skin types will want to use Rhonda Allison's Growth Factor Serum.

Self Care
It’s important to give your skin and yourself a little extra TLC during menopause. Draw yourself a nice bath (a cold one if needed!), light some candles, and apply a face mask. If you haven’t tried Mighty Tighty mask yet, try it out! It is amazing at firming the skin. For a little more clarifying action, use Peach & Honey Mask. It also tightens the skin, while gently exfoliating and brightening.
